Livelink Data Storage and Retrieval
Challenge:
One of the world’s largest energy companies required help with their data storage and retrieval. LiveLink had been utilised as the primary storage location for all common process, drilling documentation for many years. However, much historic data still resided on other systems. The data needed to be rationalised and moved from the legacy NT system.
Solution:
The global LiveLink system had suffered only partial user uptake within the team. Therefore it was decided, through consultation with Appetite and the relevant project management, that a one-off migration of all data from NT to LiveLink was required. All data within NT was analysed, then de-duplicated and non-applicable data was deleted, or archived off as demanded. The working data was uploaded to an offline area of LiveLink. This action ensured the system suffered no downtime, which was paramount to the project. All live data within LiveLink was also migrated over to this offline area and the relevant access permissions activated. Appetite assisted in the creation and agreement of procedures to maintain the system.
Results:
De-duplicated documentation was securely stored on the LiveLink servers, and was accessible by the entire organisation at a read only level. Write access to certain areas was applied based on team membership. Improved search criteria were introduced at a metadata level, making it easier to search for the documentation required. Full software investment was realised.
- Increasing awareness amongst the team on how to administer and use the system effectively, which consequently had a significant reduction in costs for the company by reducing data search times
- Reduced duplication, and removal of redundant documents increased available server space.
- Consistent folder structure
- All stored on one server and application, standardised across the entire SPU, and beyond
- Easier access-control via Licence and group access
