Happy Pancake Day, what will you be putting on yours?
By: Appetite21 Feb 12, 09:42 AM

Pancakes are so famous they even have their own day!
Pancake Day also known as Shrove Tuesday in Britain. Pancake Day is the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. 'Shrove' - as in Shrove Tuesday - stems from old English word 'shrive', meaning 'confess all sins'. It is called Pancake Day because it is the day traditionally for using up any stocks of milk, butter and eggs in the storeroom cupboard which were forbidden during the abstinence of Lent.
Here at Appetite we are incredibly generous people. Not only can we help feed your brain but we can also help you fuel your body with a simple pancake recipe. So get your eggs, milk and flour at the ready, stock up on the lemon, sugar and Nutella and get your frying pan or griddle out!
Basic Pancake Recipe
4oz plain flour, sifted
pinch of salt
1 egg
1/2pt milk
2oz butter
If you’re taking the DIY approach: sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre of the flour and break the egg into it. Whisk the egg in, ensuring all the flour is fully mixed in. Add the milk gradually, whisking as you go. When all the liquid has been added, keep whisking until the batter is smooth. If you have some time leave it to stand for 20 minutes at room temperature. If there isn’t, don’t stress.
Melt the butter and use some kitchen paper to grease the frying pan.Ensure the pan is medium hot
How much batter you need for each pancake depends on the size of your frying pan or griddle but normally it's about a tablespoon full.
Shoogle the batter in the pan to coat the base evenly. To see when the first side’s done, lift the edge with a palette knife (if you realise at this point that you don’t own a palette knife, use whatever scraping thing you do own and make sure that by next Pancake Day you’ve bought one, as well as replaced the pan you will possibly have wrecked by now.

Grip the frying pan handle with both hands and toss the pancake with abandon. Rescue the pancake from the floor, roof or walls if necessary, saying, it''ll be fine I'm sure the kitchen is clean!
Cook the other side till it’s done.
Serve with lemon, sugar or if you are feeling a bit wicked, dig out the Nutella jar and go wild with the chocolate.
Pancakes aside, it may be that you have technology in your "storeroom cupboard" that you can make use of? Is your head bubbling with ideas that you need help to shape into a plan? Where to start? Get in contact with Appetite and let us help you get that plan into action.
Happy Pancake Day 2012 everyone!
